Twitter considers selling Usernames through online auctions
Twitter has been aiming to boost its revenue in recent days and now is considering selling usernames.
Elon Musk, new owner of Twitter, has been looking for ways to boost the Twitter’s revenue since his debut. The company is reported to be aiming to sell its usernames to boost its revenue.
According to a recent report from the New York Times, engineers at the company are going to hold online auctions where people can bid for usernames. Twitter has discussed this new potential way of generating revenue since at least December, the report continues. However, it’s still unclear if the plan will be put into effect and if it includes all usernames.
Twitter will soon start freeing up 1.5 billion usernames, said Elon Musk in a tweet last month. He also revealed that inactive accounts would be removed. Since purchasing the social network in October, Musk stated in another Tweet that he’s interested in freeing up accounts with desired Usernames.
Remarkably, in its username squatting policy, Twitter has stated that any attempt to buy or sell usernames is illegal and may result in permanent account suspension. Nonetheless, people have been able to buy their desired usernames on the black market from years ago, according to Guardian.

Twitter attempts to boost revenue
As stated in a new report, many advertisers have left the platform after Elon Musk took over Twitter. For the same reason, the company’s revenue has dropped. Even so, Twitter has recently introduced new features for the platform including longer tweets which will be available from next month.
The report released after the popular messenger Telegram announced it has launched a new marketplace on the TON blockchain to auction usernames in October.
